If you get stuck, or a key doesn’t do what you expect, let us know. The app has no accounts, so we have no way of reaching you: the line you send us is all we know.

- Your app version, found under the menu bar icon > About Keyboard Layout Switcher.
- Your Mac model and macOS version, and the keyboard you use (built-in, Mac or Windows).
- What you chose in the menu, and which key you pressed when it happened.
- The input sources you have enabled.
Caps Lock doesn’t switch input sources
When you choose Mac Layout Keyboard or Windows Layout Keyboard, Caps Lock sends F18. To switch input sources, F18 has to be the input source shortcut. The first time you choose one, the app shows a setup window.
- In System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts… > Input Sources, turn off “Select the previous input source” and turn on “Select next source in Input menu”.
- Double-click the shortcut for “Select next source in Input menu” and press Caps Lock to set it to F18.
- Two or more input sources must be enabled (System Settings > Keyboard > Text Input > Edit…).
- If a key remapping app such as Karabiner-Elements is changing the same key, turn one of them off.
Which keys change
- Windows Layout Keyboard swaps Option and Command on both sides. On a Windows keyboard, both Alt keys become Command and the Windows keys become Option.
- No keys other than Option, Command and Caps Lock change. Control stays as it is.
- If you switch between a Mac keyboard and a Windows keyboard, just choose the layout in the menu each time. The same layout applies to every connected keyboard.
How to turn on capitals
Because the Caps Lock key is used to switch input sources, you turn capitals on and off with the Caps Lock item in the menu. While they are on, the menu bar shows the Caps Lock symbol. The keyboard’s Caps Lock light comes on only when you press the key itself, so it stays off when the app turns capitals on.
Putting the keys back
Choose the checked layout in the menu again and every key returns to the macOS default, and the menu bar icon changes to two arrows. Restarting your Mac also clears the key mapping.
The layout is gone after a restart
macOS clears the key mapping when your Mac restarts. Turn on Open at Login in the menu and the app opens when you log in and applies the layout you last chose. It is off by default.
Removing the app completely
- Choose the checked layout in the menu again to put the keys back.
- If you turned on Open at Login, turn it off.
- Move Keyboard Layout Switcher from the Applications folder to the Trash.
- To remove its settings too, move the ~/Library/Containers/kr.co.qnit.keyboard-layout-switcher folder to the Trash.
